The Maldives’ main opposition party, the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), which holds a majority in parliament, has collected enough signatures to submit a motion to impeach Maldives President Mohamed Muizou, local media “The Sun” reported on Monday.

The report quoted a congressman from the Democratic Party as saying that the Democratic Party has cooperated with the Democratic Party to collect signatures for the impeachment motion.

Adhahdhu said a total of 34 parliamentarians, including representatives from the Democratic Party and the Democratic Party, supported the motion to impeach the president that was disrupted by chaos in the Maldives Parliament yesterday.

Adhadhu is an online news portal in the Maldives.

The Sun further reported that the Democratic Party decided to deny approval to Interior Minister Ali Ihusan and Defense Minister Mohamed Ghassan Moumoun if government lawmakers continued to disrupt parliament.

Meanwhile, Adehadu said police have deployed a heavy police presence ahead of today’s meeting to beef up security in the Maldivian Parliament following skirmishes between political leaders inside the Maldives Parliament.

In a video shared by the media, police can be seen gathering outside the parliament building carrying protective shields.

Earlier on Sunday, the Maldives Parliament witnessed violence by government members (PPM/PNC party) disrupting the Parliament and Speaker meetings.

Parliament is due to hold a crucial vote on Sunday to ratify Muizu’s government.

A fight between DPP MP Issa and People’s National Council MP Abdullah Shahim Abdul Hakim was seen as dramatic images emerged on social media in Malé.

According to Adedu, one video showed Shahim grabbing Issa’s legs and the two fell together, while another video that went viral on social media showed Issa kicking Shahim in the neck and pulling his hair.

The video also shows other members pushing Shahim out of the area. One lawmaker was injured and taken to an ambulance, local media reported.

It is worth noting that the approval of the ministers was originally scheduled for 1:30 pm, however, several PNC members blocked the House of Representatives and disrupted the meeting.

Demonstrators said accepting the ministers would hinder progress as they called for the resignation of the parliament speaker.

Adedu said the ruling coalition parties, the People’s National Council and the People’s Party, issued a statement saying the ministers’ refusal was hampering the delivery of public services.

However, Muizou’s chief adviser and People’s National Council chairman Abdul Rahim Abdullah said ministers have the right to be reappointed even without authorization.

He criticized the refusal to approve the ministers’ decision as irresponsible.

Recently, two opposition parties in the Maldives have come out against the current regime over its “naked” anti-India policies.

The Democratic Party of Maldives and the Democratic Party of Maldives jointly issued a joint press statement, calling the change in foreign policy “extremely detrimental” to the country’s long-term development.

The statement reiterated and affirmed the opposition’s belief that “alienating any development partner, especially the country’s most long-term allies, would be extremely detrimental to the country’s long-term development”.

The opposition further emphasized that “the stability and security of the Indian Ocean are crucial to the stability and security of the Maldives.

“Both the Maldives Democratic Party and the Democratic Party emphasized the urgent need for successive governments to maintain their ‘capacity to work with all development partners for the benefit of the Maldivian people, as the Maldives has traditionally done’.
