Malaysia’s Court of Appeal on Wednesday reinstated charges of abuse of power against opposition leader and former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, state news agency Bernama reported.
The Kuala Lumpur High Court in August dismissed four charges and acquitted Muhyiddin, ruling that the charges did not detail his alleged crimes. Muhyiddin, who led Malaysia for 17 months between 2020 and 2021, has pleaded not guilty and said the charges were politically motivated.
However, three judges of the Court of Appeal on Wednesday unanimously ruled to send Muhyiddin’s case back to the court for further action, Bernama reported. The court found that the charges were clear and that it was not necessary to provide further details about the alleged offences.
Muhyiddin’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the decision.
Since Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s coalition came to power in November 2022, the former prime minister and his party have faced corruption investigations.
Muhyiddin, who leads Malaysia’s Malay-centric conservative opposition bloc, has also been charged with two counts of money laundering and accused of accepting bribes worth 232.5 million ringgit ($48.77 million), which he denies. a little.
Muhyiddin accused Anwar of plotting a political vendetta, but the prime minister denied this.
