The police in Maharashtra’s Thane city on Thursday arrested a 29-year-old man for threatening his uncle and trying to extort Rs 1 crore from him.

The wife of complainant Subhash Ramchandra Tupe lent Rs 61 lakh to accused Mangesh Arun Thorat from Ahmed Nagar for some business, the official said. After signing the agreement, she also invested Rs 125 crore in another venture through a man from Uttar Pradesh.

When the complainant’s wife did not get any monetary return from the UP men, she handed over a copy of the agreement to Thorat and sought his help to recover the funds. After learning that his uncle, a retired state government engineer, had a lot of money, Throat allegedly started demanding Rs 1 crore from him and tried to avoid repaying the Rs 61 lakh he had borrowed, the official said.

Citing complaints, senior inspector Shekhar Bagad of Thane police’s anti-extortion wing said Thorat even threatened to harm his uncle and aunt and defamed them by filing a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Bureau.

He said that based on Tupe’s complaint, police laid a trap and arrested Thorat at a toll plaza in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday when he collected Rs 1 crore from his mother.
