A 48-year-old man from Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra allegedly lost Rs 136 crore after online fraudsters lured him to invest in stock trading, police said on Sunday.
Acting on a complaint, the Cyber Police Station has registered a case under Section 420 (cheating) and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act against the duo and an organization called Angel One, an official said.
Senior Inspector Gajanan Kadam said an investigation has been launched but no arrests have been made so far.
According to police, the fraud occurred between January 20 and March 13.
He said the accused contacted the complainant, a resident of Jui Nagar, through WhatsApp and provided him with information about stock trading and assured him of good returns on his investment.
The complainant was asked to transfer Rs 136 crore to different bank accounts for investment in the stock market, the official said.
However, when the complainant did not receive any money from the defendant, he realized that he had been cheated and reported the matter to the police.
