Lufthansa said on Friday its planes would no longer use Iranian airspace as it extended a suspension of flights to and from Tehran amid rising tensions in the Middle East.

“Due to the current situation, Lufthansa will suspend flights to and from Tehran until Thursday, April 18,” a company spokesman said on Friday.

“The airline also no longer uses Iranian airspace.”

Flights to the Iranian capital have been suspended since April 6.

Lufthansa did not outline the immediate reason for the suspension.

But the move comes after Iran blamed arch-enemy Israel for an attack in Syria this month that killed two Iranian generals and threatened retaliation.

Since the war in the Gaza Strip broke out in October, Israel has stepped up strikes against Iran-linked targets in Syria.
