Chennai Super Kings on Friday started a new era in IPL 2024 under the captaincy of Ruturaj Gaikwad. Under his leadership, CSK defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore. His captaincy was praised by Sunil Gavaskar and Irrfan Pathan. Former CSK captain MS Dhoni was the wicketkeeper for this match. He guided Gaikwad well and was even seen setting up the field at times. This led to an interesting conversation between Virender Sehwag and Suresh Raina, both long-time former teammates of MS Dhoni.
“Suresh Raina ji, Chenna Tara, Hai?” Sehwag told Raina.
“Lag behind raha hai Thala hi kar rahe hai (Looks like Thala is doing it – Captain)” Raina replied.

After five-time champions Chennai Super Kings took over the leadership from Ruturaj Gaikwad on Thursday, head coach Stephen Fleming admitted that despite the appointment of Ravindra Jade Ravindra Jadeja is the captain for IPL 2022, but Chennai Super Kings are not ready to move on from MS Dhoni yet. On the eve of the IPL 2024 season opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore, CSK announced that opening batsman Gaikwad will replace Dhoni as captain.
In 2022, CSK entered the IPL with Jadeja as captain, but the move backfired and Dhoni took back the captaincy.
“We are not ready to give up on MS (Dhoni) in 2022. Dhoni has a good feel for the game but we want to develop young players to fill the role. We are ready this time,” Fleming told the media at CSK Before the match against RCB.
“Last time MS left the captaincy, it was a shock to us, we didn’t know MS was going to resign. But this time we knew,” Fleming said.
“We have always tried to develop leaders. After MS Dhoni, we were living at a slow pace. But trusting these youngsters has paid off well for us. I have worked with the likes of Rutu (Gaikwad) The young man has spoken about leadership and captaincy. This is a great opportunity for him to lead the team,” Fleming said.
Fleming said Dhoni looked promising in the practice matches ahead of the IPL and hoped he would not face any fitness-related issues during the tournament.
“MS performed well in practice and I hope he will be there for us for the rest of the season,” he said.
