Full story: Trump says US will share technology to allow South Korea to build nuclear-powered submarines
The United States will share close technology with South Korea to allow it to build nuclear-powered submarines, President Donald Trump said on social media after meeting with the country’s president on Thursday.
President Lee Jae-Myung stressed to Trump in their Wednesday meeting that the goal is to modernize the alliance with the US, noting plans to increase military spending to ease the financial burden on the US.
The South Korean leader said there may have been a misunderstanding when he last spoke about nuclear-powered submarines in August, saying his government was seeking nuclear fuel rather than weapons.
Lee said that if South Korea were equipped with nuclear-powered submarines, it could help US activities in the region.
US nuclear submarine technology is widely considered to be one of the most sensitive and highly protected technology the military possesses. The US has been incredibly protective of that knowledge, and even the recently announced agreement with close allies the United Kingdom and Australia to help them acquire nuclear submarine technology does not feature the US directly transferring its knowledge.
