There seemed to be no progress for Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Hardik Pandya as the team suffered its second loss in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Wednesday. After narrowly losing to Gujarat Titans (GT) in the season opener, MI were comprehensively beaten at the expense of SRH, with the hosts posting the largest team total in IPL history. In a six-hit festival at the Uppal Stadium, SRH defeated MI with a score of 277-3, taking a 31-run lead. While Hardik’s captaincy has been under scanner, a video has surfaced on social media claiming that bowling coach Lasith Malinga ignored the MI skipper, who was sitting next to an agitated Kieron Pollard.

SRH opener Travis Head (62 off 24) and third-place finisher Abhishek Sharma (63 off 23) put on a sensational power-hitting performance, The latter snatched the fastest fifty record from the Australians within minutes.

Heinrich Klaasen (80 not out off 34 balls) finally provided a spark for SRH, helping them break their 11-year-old record. The previous highest total in the IPL was 263 runs in five games by Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013. This is also the highest total recorded in a T20 league.

Mumbai bowlers were stunned by SRH’s six-hit spree but their batsmen set off with a target and completed a game in seemingly one-way traffic at the interval.

In the end, they ended the match with 5 wins and 246 runs in 20 overs.

A total of 38 sixes were hit in the game, setting a record. This was also the first time that 500 runs were scored in a T20 game.

“The wickets are good, but 277, no matter how well you bowl, if the opponent scores 277, it means they bat well. It’s tough for the bowlers. The score is close to 500, so The wickets are helping the batsmen,” Hardik said after the match.
