Labor MPs betting on May election say Sunak ‘backed off’ after paying

A Labor MP made a £10 bet with Kay Burley that there would be a general election in May, calling Rishi Sunak a “chicken” while placing the bet.

Less than three weeks after placing the bet, Jonathan Ashworth returned to Sky News to present Ms Burley with a check after the Prime Minister ruled out early voting.

“Rishi Sunak is cowardly and he is afraid of the British people,” the shadow treasurer said.

“We still need an election and he should specify a date, but I have to pay for it.”

At the end of the interview, Mr Ashworth laughed off “doubling down” on the June election.
