After the NDA’s landslide victory in the state, Nitish Kumar is once again set to take charge as the Chief Minister of Bihar. After being elected as the legislature party leader, he took oath as the CM of Bihar today, November 20, his tenth time in the role.
Kumar will receive a salary as Chief Minister and will also be entitled to a pension for his tenure as the first Member of Parliament (MP).
They will also get benefits in the form of dearness allowance, traveling allowance and security. However, according to News18, he will not get 10 times the pension despite serving multiple terms as an MLA.
Let’s take a look at his monthly compensation, which includes his income as CM as well as pension from his MP and MLA tenure.
Pension from Nitish’s parliamentary career
Nitish Kumar served as an MP from 1989 until his election defeat in 2004. MPs get a basic salary of ₹31,000, even if they have served just one day.
According to News18, after five years of tenure, they are eligible for an additional ₹2,500 for each additional year of service.
Kumar’s MP pension, including dearness allowance, based on his years in Parliament, is currently ₹68,500.
Nitish Kumar’s salary as Chief Minister of Bihar
According to News18, in his role as Chief Minister of Bihar, Kumar will earn a monthly salary of around ₹2.5 lakh, which includes accommodation, office, security and MLA-related benefits.
According to News18, the ministers receive a salary of ₹65,000 and regional allowance of ₹70,000 per month.
MLA pension from state politics
Although Kumar has often been a member of the Legislative Council rather than the Legislative Assembly of Bihar, according to News18, the pension for MLAs (members of the Legislative Assembly) and MLCs (members of legislative councils) is the same.
He first became an MLA in 1985, at which time he qualified for a base pension of ₹45,000. Over time, the pension increases by ₹4,000 for each additional year of service. From 2005 to 2025, Kumar accumulated 21 years in the legislature, bringing his additional pension to ₹84,000.
When added to the base amount, his total pension as a state MLA comes to ₹1.29 lakh.
