King Charles to open Balmoral Castle to public for first time in history

The king’s Scottish residence will open for the public to visit the Royal Rooms at Balmoral Castle for the first time this summer.

An experienced guide will take the group through several rooms used by Charles and Queen Camilla as part of his desire to make the royal residence more accessible to the public.

One source noted that unlike other tourist attractions such as Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, Balmoral was not built to accommodate large tour guides.

The month-long summer program is expected to be a trial period, with estate staff taking note of the impact of increased footfall on the historic building, which was purchased by Queen Victoria in 1852.

The public can now enter the Green Drawing Room, Family Dining Room, Library and Page Hall where the late Queen Elizabeth II met Liz Truss.

On previous tours, guided tour areas were limited to the ballroom, gardens and wider grounds.

In a statement on its website, Balmoral Estate said: “For the first time since the castle was completed in 1855, we are allowed to take you on a private tour with an experienced guide.

“They will take you on a historical journey and visit several beautiful rooms within Balmoral Castle.

“You’ll learn about the castle’s origins and how it has been loved by generations of royals.

“Traveling back in time, from the time Queen Victoria and Prince Albert purchased Balmoral Castle to today, you can see how rooms within the castle are used today Your Majesty the King and Queen and other members of the royal family.

“You’ll see why Balmoral is such a special place – the much-loved and famous royal family’s Highland home.”

Tours will run from July 1 to August 4, with 40 tickets available each day, priced at £100 or £150 (if afternoon tea is included).

The castle, located in Aberdeenshire, has long been considered the late Queen’s favorite residence and was the site of her death on September 8, 2022.

Since taking the throne, the King has made clear his intention to improve access to the royal residence, with St James’s Palace due to open to the public for a limited time in 2022 and 2023.

Buckingham Palace has also become more accessible and hosted a number of holiday-themed tours last winter.
