London:
Britain’s King Charles III went to church on Sunday in his first public appearance since Buckingham Palace’s shocking announcement nearly a week ago that he had cancer.
The 75-year-old monarch was photographed entering St Mary Magdalene Church at the royal country residence Sandringham in eastern England, where he currently lives.
Charles waved to waiting media as he walked with his wife, Queen Camilla, before being greeted by the church’s rector, the Rev. Paul Williams, who shook hands.
Later on Saturday, the king issued a message expressing his “heartfelt gratitude for the many messages of support and well wishes” he had received since Monday’s announcement.
“Kind thoughts like this are the greatest comfort and encouragement,” Charles added.
It was his first statement since Buckingham Palace said he had begun treatment for “a form of cancer” (but did not specify which type).
The diagnosis was made after “an isolated issue was noticed” and investigated while he was being treated for benign prostatic hypertrophy.
Charles is taking an indefinite break from public royal duties but continues to carry out administrative tasks behind closed doors.
He was diagnosed just 17 months into his reign after the death of his 96-year-old mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on September 8, 2022.
Aside from polo and skiing injuries, he is in generally good health.
Camilla said Thursday her husband was doing “really well” under the circumstances.
On Tuesday, Charles was photographed in the back seat of a car leaving his Clarence House residence in London for Sandringham.
He met briefly with his estranged younger son, Prince Harry, who flew from the United States to visit him after his diagnosis.
