'Kejriwal Ko Insulin Do': AAP workers protest outside Tihar jail

Atishi claimed there was a “conspiracy” to harm Mr Kejriwal.

New Delhi:

Aam Aadmi Party workers and leaders protested outside west Delhi’s Tihar jail on Sunday carrying insulin, demanding that it be provided to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who suffers from diabetes.

Delhi Cabinet Minister Atishi and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Sanjeev Jha were present at the protest. Dozens of party workers carried placards reading “Kejriwal koinsulin do” and sang “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram” outside the jail.

“This is not a protest. The people of Delhi are worried about the health of Chief Minister Kejriwal, who is suffering from diabetes. They have sent insulin to him,” she said.

Atishi claimed there was a “conspiracy” to harm Mr Kejriwal.

“The Tihar government had said that they have specialist doctors, but yesterday they wrote to AIIMS looking for a diabetes specialist. Kejriwal has been in judicial custody for nearly 20 days, but they are now seeking a diabetes specialist.

“This suggests there was a conspiracy. His blood sugar levels were very high and not giving him insulin would be harmful to his health,” she said.

The Tihar government earlier in the day said relevant senior experts from AIIMS provided consultation to Mr Kejriwal through video conferencing on Saturday.

A prison official said: “After a detailed 40-minute consultation, Mr Kejriwal was assured that there was nothing serious and he was advised to continue taking his prescribed medications, which will be assessed and reviewed regularly.”

The video conference was organized by the Tihar jail administration on the request of Kejriwal’s wife Sunita Kejriwal.

Besides a senior specialist from the hospital, medical staff from Tihar also participated in the call. AIIMS experts obtained complete records of Mr. Kejriwal’s CGM (blood glucose monitoring sensor) and details of his diet and medications.

“The issue of insulin was neither raised by Mr. Kejriwal nor suggested by doctors,” the official added.
