In a violent incident, a video purportedly showing the daughter-in-law brutally beating her octogenarian father-in-law with a steel cane has caused a stir on social media platforms.
The video, which quickly went viral, showed an act of abuse that sparked widespread condemnation and calls for justice from Mangaluru’s civil society.
In the incident captured on CCTV, 87-year-old Padmanabha Suvarna was assaulted by his daughter-in-law Uma Shankari at Kulshekar in Mangaluru Uma Shankari). The attack, which occurred on March 9 and involved the use of crutches, left the elderly victim with serious injuries.
Padmanabha Suvarna, a resident of Mangaluru, is currently undergoing treatment for her injuries at a private hospital.
The accused Uma Shankari, who currently works as a manager in Attavar Power Company, was detained following a complaint filed by the victim’s daughter.
According to reports, the defendant’s husband is the victim’s son and works abroad. The incident caused an uproar in the local community, raising concerns for the welfare of older people and the need for tough measures to combat domestic violence.
Uma Shankari, an official of the Karnataka Electricity Board (KEB) in Atharwal, was arrested soon after the victim’s daughter lodged a complaint.
Doctors treating the Suvarna told PTI that the victim suffered multiple injuries, including head injuries, which he sustained when he fell on a wooden couch at the scene of the attack.
