Bengaluru, Oct 25 (IANS) Karnataka Police on Saturday arrested a man for forcing a girl to convert to Islam in order to marry her.

The accused Mohammed Ishaq has been arrested from Amrutalli police station area of Bengaluru.

The matter came to light when the victim lodged a complaint against her boyfriend and his family, alleging that they were pressurizing her to convert to Islam for marriage. The complaint was lodged at HSR Layout police station in Bengaluru on Thursday.

According to the police, the victim and Mohammad Ishaq were identified through Instagram on October 17, 2024. After some conversation, a relationship began between them. On October 30, 2024, they met at a mall in Bengaluru’s Thanisandra area, where the accused allegedly promised to talk to her parents and marry her.

Later that day, he booked a room in Dasarahalli and allegedly sexually assaulted her. The victim claimed that he repeatedly physically abused her on the pretext of marriage. Over time, she became suspicious of his behavior and discovered that he had several affairs with other girls. When she insisted on marriage, he allegedly kept postponing it by making excuses.

It was further revealed that the accused had got engaged to a Muslim girl on September 14, 2025. When asked about this, he allegedly threatened the victim, warning that she would be killed if she contacted him again, and asked her to move on. The victim also told that she was abused in vulgar language.

Police said the victim attempted suicide, following which Mohammed Ishaq’s family contacted her family and suggested that the matter could be resolved amicably. However, Ishaq’s elder brother and brother-in-law reportedly told the girl that she would have to convert to Islam if she wanted to marry him. He reportedly instructed her to learn to perform namaz (prayer) within 40 days and said that marriage discussions would proceed only after her conversion.

The case has taken a controversial turn, with Hindu organizations contacting the victim’s family, calling it a case of “love jihad” and demanding justice. The police are taking the matter seriously and are continuing the investigation.

It is noteworthy that BJP has alleged that cases of “Love Jihad” are increasing in Karnataka due to the appeasement policies of the Congress-led government. Former minister and BJP MLC CT Ravi had urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to comprehensively investigate all cases of love jihad, land jihad and vote jihad.

BJP state president and MLA BY Vijayendra also said that cases of love jihad were on the rise in the state, claiming it was following the “Kerala model” because of Siddaramaiah’s minority appeasement politics. Vijayendra said, “Those who commit crimes against women and other anti-social activities believe that the state government will support them because it hesitates in arresting accused persons even in cases like raising ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ slogans in Vidhan Soudha. This policy is destabilizing law and order and creating fear among Hindu families and women.”
