The Karnataka government on Thursday decided to implement a shisha ban in the state to protect “public health and youth”.

Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao announced the ban considering the serious health risks associated with it.

He further said, “In view of this issue, we are implementing a shisha ban in Karnataka by amending the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). Our government is working towards making a safer place for our future generations. , a healthier environment.”

The minister also attached the official state government order written in Kannada to his social media post.

The Karnataka government is considering banning hookah bars and raising the legal age for smoking from 18 to 21 years in September 2023, the Karnataka health minister announced.

At the time, Gundu Rao stressed that unknown ingredients used in hookahs could lead to addiction.

Last year, the Haryana government took a similar step and announced a ban on serving shisha to patrons in hotels, restaurants, bars and commercial establishments across the state.
