The judge in Donald Trump’s hush-money criminal case on Monday expanded the former president’s gag order after he assaulted the judge’s daughter last week and made false accusations against her on social media.

Judge Juan M. Merchan said the original gag order he issued last Tuesday did not include his family, but Trump’s subsequent actions required their inclusion.

Merchant’s daughter, Loren Merchant, is a Democratic political consultant. Trump wrote on his Truth social platform that Loren Murchin “made money by working to ‘catch Trump’” and falsely accused her of posting a photo on social media showing him in jail After the photos, prosecutors urged Merchin to clarify or expand his gag order.

The trial, scheduled to begin on April 15, accuses Trump of falsifying payment records to cover up negative coverage during the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump has denied wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records.

Trump’s lawyers have fought against the gag order and its expansion, arguing that Trump was delivering protected political campaign speech.
