Johnny Depp felt “lucky” in a number of different ways to land the role of King Louis XV of France in the movie. Jeanne DuBarry.
Co-star and director Melvin joined Depp on stage at the Curzon Theater in Mayfair, where they gave a brief synopsis of the film during the premiere.
“I feel very lucky to be [offered the role] —strange, strange, perverse luck,” he said during a rare public appearance on stage in London.
“Because when Melvin and I first met and talked about the idea of me doing this movie and playing King Louis XV of France, the thing that immediately goes through your brain is you immediately go back to Kentucky, where, like, , everything is fried, so you realize you’re coming out of your belly button and all of a sudden you’re playing the King of France.”
“It made no sense to me and I tried to talk her out of it,” he continued.
“But she didn’t hear it, and she had a lot of courage to ask me to join her cast. No matter what we did, no matter what we went through, I think, and I hope you’ll find, that this kid just wanted to make a movie And the pain is worth it.”
