Joe Alvin didn’t even graduate before his first audition, but he made a lasting impression that changed his life.

The 33-year-old actor landed his breakthrough role in Ang Lee’s 2016 film “Billy Lynn” A long intermission.

Casting director Ivy Kaufman recalls people magazine About the time Alvin came to his first audition with just a backpack.

“We actually did a massive search for the role and I brought a whole bunch of people to find Ang [Lee] Kaufman, 70, said of the casting of the war drama.

“He’s just left drama school, I actually don’t think he’s graduated yet, I think he’s graduating next week, and I just said, ‘Can he record it quickly? Within 24 hours?'”

Alvin’s agent got the tape and the rest is history.

“I just thought he was very special and perfect for the role, and I called Ann, who loved the role, and it was sent to the studio. We flew him to New York the next day,” Kaufman relayed.

The actor had just flown in for the audition, but stayed to continue working.

When Alvin arrived in the United States, “he only had a backpack, and the producers took him to the Gap to buy underwear.”

Discussing his acting skills, Kaufman said she was a “huge fan” of his and praised him as a “deep actor.”

“Jo is a little touchy,” she said. “He knew exactly what emotions to express when. Joe knew how to find this very American character in his first movie.”
