The Center has informed the Parliament that Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh have seen a decline in student enrollment in government schools in 2023-24 compared to last year.
Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, per news agency- Kashmir News Observer (KNO) informed the Lok Sabha that fell from 14,54,668 in 2022-23 from 14,54,668 in 2022-23 to 14,54,668 in 2023-24. “Similarly, Ladakh declined by 28,667 students in 2022-23 to 26,275 in 2023-24.”
He said that the decline in enrollment in some states and UT, including Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, could show a statistical change, as the integrated district information system for education plus (UDISE+) was transferred from 2022-23 to individual student-level data collection from 2022-23.
To address enrollment issues, he listed several interventions under the Samagra Shikha Scheme, including residential schools, free textbooks and uniforms, transport facilities, special hostels and mid-day meals under the PM Poson scheme.
He said that financial assistance is being provided to states and UTs to implement these interventions and to encourage school participation- (KNO)
