Italian regulators blocked popular chatbot for weeks last year

Italian authorities have accused OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, of violating EU data protection laws and have given the US company 30 days to respond.
Italy’s data protection regulator said in a statement on Monday that it had “notified OpenAI, the company behind the ChatGPT artificial intelligence platform, of a breach of data protection law.”
The regulator blocked the popular chatbot for several weeks last year, becoming the first Western country to take such action.
After the temporary injunction was issued, the regulator concluded that “available evidence points to a breach of the EU General Data Protection Regulation”.
“OpenAI may file a counterclaim within 30 days for alleged violations.”
The regulator said it would “take into account the ongoing work of a working group set up by the EU’s central data regulator to help countries deal with ChatGPT-related issues” when making a final ruling on the case.
Last year, Italian regulators said OpenAI had no legal basis to justify the large-scale collection and storage of personal data to train the algorithms run by ChatGPT.
It also highlights the lack of clarity about whose data is being collected.
