The fashion house announced the death of designer Roberto Cavalli at the age of 83.

Cavalli, known for his ornate animal print designs, died at his home in Florence after a long illness, Italy’s ANSA news agency reported.

ANSA said he had been ill “for some time” and his health had “deteriorated significantly” in recent days. The statement added that his family informed his closest friends and acquaintances of his death.

“Life is full of love,” the brand said in a statement on its Instagram page. “It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our founder, Roberto Cavalli, today.”

“From humble beginnings in Florence, Roberto managed to become a globally recognized name, loved and respected by all. Born talented and creative, Roberto believed that everyone could discover and nurture their own artist.

Fausto Puglisi, the company’s creative director, added: “Dear Roberto, you may not be with us anymore, but I know I will always feel your spirit with me. Born on November 15, 1940 in Florence, Italy’s premier leather processing center, Cavalli first appeared on the fashion scene in the 1970s and became famous for his printed leather garments. He later expanded into brightly colored printed garments and stretch sandblasted jeans.

His designs attracted the attention of stars including actresses Sophia Loren and Brigitte Bardot, and later Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian.

He is survived by his partner of 10 years, a model named Sandra Nilsson, and his six children.
