Jerusalem:
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that the United Nations Palestinian refugee agency had been “completely infiltrated” by Hamas, after some countries criticized Israel over claims that 12 UNRWA staff were involved in the October 7 attack. Funding has been suspended.
“UNRWA is completely infiltrated by Hamas,” Netanyahu told a meeting of U.N. ambassadors in Jerusalem, adding that “we need to have other U.N. agencies and other aid agencies replace UNRWA.”
Netanyahu’s comments came as UNRWA said it was “extremely important” to conduct an independent investigation into Israeli accusations that 12 of its employees were involved in the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel.
Following the accusations, major donors including the UK, Germany, Japan and the United States announced they were suspending aid to UNRWA.
“UNRWA has been at the service of Hamas, Hamas schools and many other things,” Netanyahu said at the meeting, a video clip of which was released by the government press office.
“I say this with great regret because we want an objective and constructive agency to provide assistance. Today we need such an agency in Gaza, but UNRWA is not that agency.”
