Israel to summon ambassadors from countries that voted for Palestine at UN

Jerusalem:

Israel will summon the ambassadors of countries that voted for Palestine’s formal membership in the United Nations on Sunday “for protest talks,” a foreign ministry spokesman said.

The move comes after Washington rejected a Palestinian bid to join the bloc earlier this week, with the Palestinian Authority saying it would “reconsider” its relationship with the United States.

In Thursday’s vote, 12 countries on the U.N. Security Council backed a resolution recommending that Palestine formally become a member, with two countries, including Britain and Switzerland, abstaining from the vote.

Only Israel’s staunchest ally, the United States, voted against it and used its veto to block the resolution’s passage.

On Saturday, Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Oren Mamostan said the ministry “will convene ambassadors of countries that voted in the Security Council to improve the status of Palestinians at the United Nations for protest talks.”

“The same protest will be made to other countries,” he said.

“The clear message that will be sent to ambassadors is that the political posture towards the Palestinians and the call for recognition of a Palestinian state, six months after the massacre of October 7, is the reward of terrorism.”

The draft resolution calls for recommendations to the General Assembly to “admit the State of Palestine as a Member State of the United Nations” to replace its current “non-member observer state” status it has held since 2012.

The majority of the United Nations’ 193 member states (137 according to Palestinian statistics) have recognized the Palestinian state.
