Israel has withdrawn all but one of its ground troops from southern Gaza, an Israeli military spokesman said, as the world grapples with six months of war since a Hamas attack on October 7.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had withdrawn its troops from the area overnight, leaving only the Nahar Brigade in southern Gaza responsible for protecting the security of the “Nezarim Corridor.” Israel built the corridor this year, which spans the Las Vegas Strip from east to west, bisecting it in half.

Israeli brigades typically consist of thousands of soldiers. The military did not immediately provide further details.

It is unclear whether the withdrawal will affect the long-threatened incursion into the southern city of Rafah, where nearly half of Gaza’s 2.3 million people are seeking asylum.

Israeli leaders have repeatedly stated that an invasion of Rafah is necessary to destroy Hamas.

The withdrawal reportedly comes four months after Israeli forces entered southern Gaza, with the operation focused on the city of Khan Younis, which bills itself as the southern headquarters of Hamas.

US President Joe Biden reportedly had a tense phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week, in which the president warned Israel that US support for its war depended on it taking “immediate action” to protect Israel. civilians, including taking “concrete, concrete and measurable” measures to address civilian harm, humanitarian suffering and the safety of aid workers.

The United States has also repeatedly warned Israel against threatening a ground invasion of Rafah.

Today marks six months since Hamas launched a brutal attack in southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and dragging some 253 hostages back to Gaza.

The Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry has since said that Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip has killed 33,175 Palestinians.

In Israel, hundreds of thousands of protesters took part in demonstrations to mark the milestone, with many calling for the prime minister’s resignation and the immediate return of the hostages.
