Israel considers counterattack against Iran, US denies warning before attack

By | Published | No Comments

The Middle East is on the brink of a devastating all-out conflict as Iran and Israel play a dangerous game of revenge. On Saturday, April 13, Iran launched a massive drone and missile attack on Israel, following an Israeli attack on its embassy in Syria.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hussein Amirabdullahian claimed that Iran notified its neighbor and Israel’s ally the United States 72 hours before the attack. However, a senior official in U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration denied this claim, saying Washington had not received any such warning.

Here are the latest developments:

  • Turkish, Jordanian and Iraqi officials said Iran gave advance notice of the attack on Israel and expanded the scope of the attack to neighboring countries and the United States.

However, a senior Biden administration official denied these claims in an interview with Reuters, saying Tehran failed to warn Washington. The official claimed that Iran only communicated with the United States after the attack began.

  • According to ABC News, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) proposed a series of military response options to the government led by Benjamin Netanyahu after the Iranian attack. The options range from striking to taking no immediate action.

  • Israeli military spokesman Maj. Gen. Daniel Hagari said Israel remained on high alert following the attack. Operational plans for offensive and defensive operations have been approved.

  • Meanwhile, Iran’s actions have been condemned and roundly condemned at the United Nations. U.S. Ambassador Robert Wood warned Tehran of consequences if it further targets Israel or the United States at a U.N. Security Council meeting on Sunday. British representative Barbara Woodward joined the U.S. envoy in condemning the Iranian attack, saying it also endangered Jordan and Iraq.

  • Iran’s special envoy to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Irawani, defended the attack as an exercise of the country’s right to self-defense. Iravani said “the Security Council… has failed in its duty to maintain international peace and security” following an apparent Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria earlier this month.

Tehran therefore had “no choice” but to respond, he said, adding that his country “does not seek escalation or war” but would respond to any “threat or aggression.”
