Washington:
Israel has submitted written assurances, as requested by the State Department, that its use of U.S.-supplied weapons will not be used to violate humanitarian law in Gaza, a U.S. official said on Wednesday.
Israel has until a Sunday deadline to submit written assurances. The State Department will assess whether Israel’s assurances are credible and report back to Congress in early May.
Israeli forces have been fighting Hamas militants in Gaza since October 7, when Hamas killed 1,200 people in southern Israel. The Palestinian Authority estimates that more than 30,000 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict.
President Joe Biden issued a new U.S. national security memorandum last month reminding countries receiving U.S. weapons to abide by international law.
