Speculations remain over MS Dhoni’s Indian Premier League (IPL) future as he gears up for the next season. Dhoni, who led the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to a record-equalling five-time win in the tournament, will don the yellow jersey again in IPL 2024. Talking about the veteran player – former India and CSK – rounder Suresh Raina said he hopes his former teammate can continue playing in the IPL for another five years. Raina, meanwhile, added that when Dhoni is no longer playing for CSK, he will play a different role in the coaching dugout of the team.
“The big question is who will be their next captain? Even if Dhoni resigns as captain, he will be in the dugout, be it as a mental toughness coach or just because of his presence. But the question is, will he Who to pick? To train?” Raina said in an episode of JioCinema dedicated to Dhoni.
“This is a crucial year for CSK. Who will MS look at? Ruturaj Gaikwad is a good choice. This is a very important year for CSK, more important than MS Dhoni.”
“Because we will see who he will choose as his deputy and probably say: ‘Now you deal with this, I have been looking after the team since 2008. You look after the yellow and I will put on the jersey and Sit down in the dressing room’.
“The important thing now is to see how he plans for the future. He is already 42 years old. I would love to see him play for another five years, or at least two or three more years.”
The IPL will kick off on Friday with defending champions CSK defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore in the first match.
