Washington:
The United States on Thursday condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin’s warnings about the risk of nuclear war as “irresponsible” but said there was no sign of a greater risk.
U.S. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters: “This is not the first time we have seen Vladimir Putin make irresponsible remarks. There is no way the leader of a nuclear-armed state would make such remarks.”
“We have communicated privately and directly with Russia in the past about the consequences of the use of nuclear weapons,” he said.
But Miller added: “We have no indication that Russia is preparing to use nuclear weapons.”
Putin warned the West in an address to the nation on Thursday that any country that sends troops into Ukraine to defend against a Russian invasion would face “tragic consequences.”
“Everything proposed by the West creates a real threat of conflict with the use of nuclear weapons, thereby destroying civilization,” Putin said.
