A truck rammed into at least six students on their way to school in southern Iraq’s Basra province on Tuesday, killing at least six and injuring 14 others, authorities said.
“Basra police arrested a truck driver who ran over six students in the Al-Hartha area, killing 14 and injuring 14 others,” Interior Ministry spokesman Miqdad Miri said. .
He added in a statement that based on preliminary information, the driver “lost control of the truck when the brakes failed.”
According to the Ministry of Health, road traffic accidents in Iraq claimed the lives of more than 4,900 people in 2022, with an average of 13 lives lost every day.
Conflict, neglect and widespread corruption have left oil-rich Iraq’s infrastructure, including roads and bridges, falling into disrepair.
Officials often blame crashes on drivers who ignore speed limits, use cell phones while driving and use drugs and alcohol.
