A boat carrying Ethiopian migrants sank off Djibouti on Monday, killing at least 38 people, according to the International Organization for Migration.

The International Organization for Migration said in a statement that it said 22 people had been rescued.

The ship was traveling to Yemen from Djibouti, a major transit country for migrants trying to reach the Gulf state from the Horn of Africa.

The route is dangerous, leaving migrants vulnerable to trafficking, kidnapping, arrest and forcible recruitment into warring groups.

Information for this report was obtained in part from The Associated Press and AFP.
