inter Milan Goalkeeper Josep Martínez was injured and died in a road collision with an 81-year-old man on his way to training.
According to reports ItalyMartínez was driving to Inter’s training ground in Appiano Gentile at 9.40am on Tuesday when he hit the man, who was in his electric wheelchair.
The incident happened on Via Bergamo in Fenegro in the province of Como, and reports say the elderly man suffered a medical episode just before the collision, which meant he was unable to avoid oncoming traffic.
“The car driven by Inter goalkeeper Josep Martínez hit a man in an electric wheelchair traveling on a roadside cycle path in the province of Como,” Italian police told the Reuters news agency.
“Martinez stopped his car to help the man who died before the ambulance arrived.” Despite the arrival of emergency services, including an ambulance and air ambulance, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is said that the goalkeeper was badly shaken by this incident but he was not harmed. Italian police are now investigating, with Inter subsequently canceling a scheduled 1pm press conference with manager Cristian Chivu.
