Kolkata, Oct 28 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Khagen Murmu, who was seriously injured in an attack earlier this month, left for AIIMS Delhi on Tuesday for advanced medical treatment.
The MP from Maldaha North, who still suffers from weak vision and difficulty in speaking, was accompanied by his wife Manju Murmu, who alleged that her husband’s condition was the result of an attack by goons supported by the ruling Trinamool Congress. She said she would meet the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister to demand justice over the incident.
The couple left the Agartala-Delhi Rajdhani Express from Malda Town station at around 3 pm on Tuesday afternoon.
Speaking briefly to the media before departure, Khagen Murmu said: “It is difficult for me to talk. I still have to consume liquid food and I cannot see clearly, especially out of my left eye. I am going to AIIMS, Delhi, for better treatment.”
His wife Manju said the family is yet to get justice for the attack. She said, “We have not got any justice till now. I will go to Delhi and meet the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister and demand justice for the attack by Trinamool-backed goons. I will also complain against the Chief Minister of the state.”
She said that her husband’s health condition remains critical. “He has blurred vision, eight teeth are loose – some of which are broken. His face is badly injured,” Manju said.
Murmu is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Siliguri, North Bengal, after the attack earlier this month. Murmu and BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh were attacked by the mob when they had gone to distribute relief material in the flood-affected areas of Nagarakata in Jalpaiguri district.
A large group of people reportedly threw stones, sticks and shoes at BJP leaders. The mob reportedly picked up stones from the nearby river and threw them at Murmu’s vehicle. The MP suffered serious facial injuries and lost a lot of blood before being taken to the hospital along with Ghosh.
The incident was widely condemned with BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemning the attack.
Later, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee went to the hospital and met the injured MP and inquired about his condition.
Police have arrested six people in connection with the attack. Investigation of the matter is ongoing.
