Earlier this year, the 25-year-old Australian visa was immediately reviewed by the country’s government after the video went viral and sparked outrage. Streble later closed down his social media accounts due to the protests.
According to court documents, she is now accused of falsely claiming she lived in Wyoming to obtain multiple state resident hunting licenses.
Streble is charged with eight misdemeanors, including six counts of perjury and one count of taking wildlife without a license. Additionally, he has been charged with non-resident hunting without a guide in a forest area.
Court records indicate that, in fact, she was listed as living in Great Falls, Montana.
According to Wyoming laws, a person must live in the Cowboy State for one full calendar year before applying for a resident hunting license. Non-residents may not hunt in Wyoming’s wilderness areas without a guide.
Streble’s notoriety skyrocketed after his Instagram video in March this year.
In this, she is seen picking up the wombat joey with her front legs in the dark on the roadside and then running away from its mother. “I caught a baby,” she said, as a man filming her laughed. She returns the wombat to the roadside after several seconds.
The backlash led to Straubel shutting down his social media channels, with Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke telling the press that his visa was being reviewed.
“The department is now working through the terms of her current visa and determining whether immigration law has been violated,” Burke said in a statement obtained by The Associated Press at the time.
He said, “I can’t wait for Australia to see the back of this person, I don’t expect her to come back.”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also criticized Streble’s actions. “Taking the womb of a child from its mother, and obviously causing suffering to the mother, is just an outrage,” Albanese told reporters.
“I suggest to this so-called influencer, maybe she could try some other Australian animals. Take a baby crocodile from its mother and see how you get there. Take another animal that can actually fight back instead of stealing the womb of a baby from its mother,” Albanese said.
The wombat appeared to be common, also known as the bare-nosed wombat. This is a preserve marsupial Found only in Australia.
Yolandi Vermaak, founder of animal care charity Wombat Rescue, said separating the young wombat from its mother created a risk that the mother would reject her offspring.
“My biggest concern is that we didn’t actually see the mother and baby reunited. When she put it down, it looked in disarray. It was moved away from where the mother was last seen. So we don’t know whether the mother and baby actually found each other again,” Vermaak told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.
