New Delhi, Nov 19 (IANS) After Congress criticized Shashi Tharoor for praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Ramnath Goenka lecture, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala on Wednesday hit back, alleging that the Congress has become intolerant of any views that do not match its leadership.

He further said that Indian National Congress no longer means “Indian National Congress” but has changed to “Indira Nazi Congress”.

Speaking to IANS, Shehzad Poonawala said, “Now Congress no longer means Indian National Congress; it is ‘Indira Nazi Congress’.” They act like Nazis. If Shashi Tharoor praises PM Modi even in general, he issues a ‘fatwa’. If someone speaks the truth they issue a ‘fatwa’. If Tharoor praises the army, he issues another ‘fatwa’. If he exposes Rahul Gandhi’s lies then he reacts in the same way. This is an example of intolerance. They cannot establish democracy at home – how can they maintain it in the country?

Meanwhile, Congress leader Supriya Shrinate slammed PM Modi’s speech, saying, “I didn’t find anything to appreciate in the speech.” She made the comment when asked about Tharoor’s positive reaction to the Prime Minister’s address, with Tharoor describing Modi’s speech as a mix of “an economic outlook and a cultural call to action, urging the nation to be restless for progress”.

On Tuesday, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor praised the Prime Minister after attending an event where Modi had delivered a lecture. Tharoor said the PM touched on important topics and encouraged India to “remain desperate for progress”, remarks that were at odds with the party’s general stance.

Poonawalla also reacted to the recent criticism leveled at Rahul Gandhi by several judges, bureaucrats and armed forces veterans over allegations of “vote theft”.

He pointed out, “Rahul Gandhi – now LOP means propaganda leader. He is working against constitutional institutions. He repeatedly attacks ECI and other government bodies. His commitment to Ambedkar’s Constitution is conditional. If he wins the election, everything is fine. If he loses, he threatens the institutions. This shows that he does not respect the Constitution. His grandmother Indira Gandhi had imposed emergency. Rahul Gandhi thinks That if he loses the election, it is a threat to the family and hence a threat to democracy.” IANS.

Poonawalla said, “Rahul Gandhi should now stop attacking the Constitution. He is becoming a hunter and not a protector.”

Meanwhile, a group of 272 eminent citizens, including former judges, ambassadors, retired bureaucrats and armed forces veterans, issued an open letter condemning the Congress and Rahul Gandhi for repeatedly targeting constitutional institutions, especially the Election Commission of India (ECI).

In the letter, the group expressed “serious concern” over several instances of Congress leaders “weakening and demeaning” democratic institutions like the armed forces, the judiciary, Parliament and now the Election Commission. He said opposition leaders and their Left allies were resorting to rhetoric to defame the ECI instead of filing formal complaints when irregularities were suspected.

“The LOP has repeatedly attacked the Election Commission, claiming it has open and closed evidence that it is involved in vote theft and alleging 100 percent evidence of wrongdoing,” the letter said.

“Using incredibly crude rhetoric, he has said that what he has found is a ‘nuclear bomb’, and when it explodes, the Election Commission will have no place to hide. He has threatened that he will not spare anyone from top to bottom in the Commission. According to him, the ECI is engaged in treason.”
