The growth of India’s dairy industry and the important role played by dairy cooperatives since the inception of Operation Flood form an integral part of the country’s development story as the country is now the largest milk producer.

Indian milk production accounts for approximately 21% of global milk production.

It is worth noting that the situation in the Indian dairy industry was very different in the 1950s and 1960s, as it was a milk-short country and more dependent on imports.

Following the visit of then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri to Anand district in Gujarat in 1964, the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) was established in 1965 with the mandate to support The ‘Anand Model’ of dairy cooperatives will be created within the country through the Operation Flood (OF) scheme which will be implemented in a phased manner.

Verghese Kurien is India’s famous “Father of the White Revolution” and the first chairman of the NDDB. Mr. Kurien, along with his team, kicked off the project, which envisaged organizing Anand model cooperatives in milk sheds across the country, where the liquid milk produced and procured by the milk cooperatives would be transported to cities.
