India makes high-security number plates mandatory for all vehicles: Here’s how to get one easily

From July 2022, all new vehicles will automatically receive an HSRP license plate. States like Karnataka now require older vehicles to be upgraded by February 17, 2024. Failure to do so may result in a fine ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000, The Indian Express reported.

What is a HSRP license plate?

HSRP is the abbreviation of High Security Registration Plate and is a standard set by the Indian government for vehicle registration plates. It includes security features such as an international registration number, a laser-etched unique serial number and a 3D hologram of the Ashok Chakra. These license plates are easily recognized by police and nearly impossible to tamper with.

Currently, all officially registered vehicles in the country are required to have HSRP plates. While states like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have no official deadline yet, Karnataka has set a clear date.

How to get a HSRP license plate?

As of now, the only way to apply for a new or replacement HSRP number plate is through the official website of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the apex national body representing the Indian automobile industry.

To apply, you need to provide details such as vehicle registration number, chassis number, engine number, OTP phone number, email ID and UPI ID or credit/debit card for online payment.

Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  • Visit and click “Book HSRP” in the upper right corner.
  • Fill in your basic information and click Submit.
  • Select your region and vehicle type, then select your vehicle make.
  • Enter your vehicle details and personal information, then pay.
  • Keep a copy of the confirmation letter provided after payment is made.

If you are unable to book your HSRP number plate online, you may need to visit a showroom or Regional Transport Office (RTO) to complete the process.

The transition to HSRP number plates is aimed at enhancing vehicle safety and simplifying the identification process across India. So, make sure you comply with regulations to avoid any fines and enjoy the benefits of this advanced technology.
