The Indian cricket team’s 15-member roster for the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup is likely to be finalized by the end of April in order to comply with the International Cricket Federation’s May 1 deadline for provisional rosters. According to reports, captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh are the confirmed members of India’s T20 World Cup squad.

The remaining 5 spots will be finalized based on the performance of the players in IPL 2024 during the first 4 weeks of the ongoing T20 tournament. BCCI sources told news agency PTI that the national selection committee is unlikely to include any new players for the T20 World Cup.

“There will not be any experiments or left field selections. All those who have played for India and performed well in T20 Internationals and IPL will be rewarded,” a BCCI official told the news agency.

It has also been reported that captain Rohit Sharma and former captain Virat Kohli may represent the Indian team in the T20 World Cup, which will be held in the West Indies and the United States starting from June 2.

IPL 2024 has already witnessed some impressive individual performances from Indian players and fans and pundits are still debating over a backup opener, a second-choice wicketkeeper, a finisher position in the middle order and a backup spinner.

Shubman Gill VS Yashasvi Jaiswal
The two young cricketers are expected to compete for a spot in the bench opener. While Rohit and Virat are the automatic picks, Shubman Gill is likely to be preferred over Shasthvi Jaiswal in his current form. GT captain Gill is in good form in IPL 2024, scoring 263 runs in seven games, including two fifties. On the other hand, RR opener Jaiswal has performed poorly in the ongoing T20 tournament, scoring only 121 runs in seven games.

DC captain Rishabh Pant, who suffered a near-fatal car accident, made a brilliant comeback in the IPL and has all but sealed his spot as the first-choice wicketkeeper in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Meanwhile, India are expected to select another wicketkeeper in their 15-man squad. Sanju Samson and KL Rahul are the contenders for the No.2 goalkeeper spot. However, Sanju is in better form than Rahul in IPL 2024 so far. Sanju scored 276 runs in 7 games while Rahul scored 204 runs. Based on the current form, Sanju may enter the top 15.

Linku Singh VS Shivam Dubey
If the national selection committee selects Virat and Rohit as openers and Jaiswal and Gill are also included, one of Rinku Singh and Shivam Dubey may miss out on India’s playing XV line-up. As finishers, they have the ability to add much-needed firepower to the sequence. Rinku and Shivam have excelled in the Indian cricket team and their respective IPL teams. CSK’s Shivam hogged the limelight in IPL 2024 by scoring 242 runs at a strike rate of over 160, while KKR’s star finisher Rinku scored 83 runs at a strike rate of 162.74 and looked good with the ball in limited opportunities The feel of the stick is very nice.

Yuzvendra Chahal VS Axar Patel VS Ravi Bishnoi
One of the three will be chosen as the third-choice spinner, with Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav a certainty. Either Yuzvendra Chahal or Ravi Bishnoi can bring variety as the only player of spin in the team. However, as things stand, Chahal might be a more preferred option than Bishnoi. The Rajasthan Royals leg-spinner found his mojo and took 12 wickets in 7 games to become the second-highest wicket-taker in IPL 2024. LSG’s Ravi Bishnoi has picked just four wickets so far in the ongoing T20 tournament. With the addition of Jadeja, the addition of Aksa looks bleak.

Arshdeep Singh – Avish Khan
Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj are almost certain to be India’s pick of one more pacer in the final 15. Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan are expected to contest for this seat. Ardeep Singh is expected to be the first choice as the left-arm pacer brings more variety to the bowling department of the Men in Blue. Arshdeep took 9 wickets in seven games for Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2024. For LSG, Avesh Khan has been a seven-time wicket-taker in as many matches. However, Avish will need to do more and be more economical to beat Ashdeep in India’s final 15-man squad.
