“India has made three strikes”: Altaf Thakur of BJP on suspension of Indus Waters Treaty

Web Desk, 05/05/2025

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Altaf Thakur on Monday claimed that India had suspended the Indus Water Treaty after the Pahgam terror attack after three strikes on Pakistan – diplomatic, economic and water after New Delhi.

He questioned the argument behind the Indus Water Treaty, which was signed in 1960, and suggests that India’s sovereignty and interests should be given priority.

Speaking to ANI, BJP leader Altaf Thakur said, “India has done three strikes – diplomatic, economic and water. Who has created this treaty under which we are not getting water from the rivers flowing on our land?”

The suspension of India’s Indus Water Treaty will severely affect Pakistan’s water supply, which will probably lead to economic difficulty and diplomatic tension, especially about water management and trade. The treaty controls the allocation of water of the Indus River, in which Pakistan depends a lot on it for agriculture and energy. India’s move is a diplomatic reaction to the alleged Pakistani support for cross -border terrorism.

Thakur indicated further action against terrorists, emphasizing the need for a strong response to terrorism.

He said, “There will be another strike that will be on terrorists. Pakistan is afraid; Pakistan is trembling. It should be known what it has done, it will be punished for this.”

BJP leader Kavinder Gupta said that Pakistan will soon see the end of the “Abhay” of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT).

“When a treaty (Indus Waters Treaty) has been suspended, we will work according to our wish. Pakistan will soon see its effects,” Gupta told ANI.

The decision to put into the “sanctuary” of the government comes after a series of Indus Water Treaty, including the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), which discussed security preparations in view of the Pahgam terrorist attack, which claimed 26 lives.

The government has announced a series of measures to send a strong message to Pakistan to support cross -border terrorism.

The government announced several measures, including the Indus Water Treaty. Other diplomatic measures include defense, military, Navy and aerial advisors in the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi, who were declared ‘personality non -Greta’ and asked to leave India within a week.

Earlier in the day, BJP leader Ravinder Raina on Monday addressed the issue of Indus Water Treaty and said that after the Pahalgam attack, the Government of India decided to suspend the Indus Water Treaty, after which water stopped from Indian rivers for Pakistan.

He said that the decision of the Government of India is clear and the flow of four rivers, Chenabs, Sutlej, Ravi and Beas has been completely stopped. Raina said that at one end, Pakistan will shed terrorists and blood, while it cannot enrich itself by taking water from this place.

“After the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the Government of India has decided to suspend the Indus Water Treaty and due to this, the water of Indian rivers flowing in Pakistan has been stopped … The water of these 4 rivers – Chenabs, Sutlaz, Ravi and Bagi – has been completely stopped … This decision of the Government of India is clear,” said Raina.

Meanwhile, the water level in the Chenab River has seen a significant decline in Akhanur, Jammu and Kashmir after closing the gates in Baglihar and Salal dams.

Local people have expressed support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to hold the Indus Waters Treaty, which believe that the water level has decreased. Talking to ANI, one of the locals said that they do not want a single drop of water to the Indian Army and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to supply support to Pakistan.

A local Kalyan Singh said, “Earlier, the Chenab River flowed at a height of 25-30 feet, but now there is barely 1.5-2 feet of water left. This is to hold the Indus Waters Treaty due to PM Modi’s decision … We do not want a single drop of water to stand with Pakistan.

“In my 75 years of life, for the first time I have seen such a small amount of water in the chainb, I thank PM Modi for taking this decision. I am surprised to see a huge change in the water level of the river, one-time filled with a bar, which is a bustleed 1-1.5 feet water … We are standing with the Indian Army.” (AI)
