India, France sign new Defense R&D agreement for turbocharged joint innovation

New Delhi, Nov 20 (IANS) A new technical agreement was signed on Thursday between the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and the French Directorate General of Armaments (DGA) to deepen defense research and development cooperation between India and France.

According to a press release of the Ministry of Defense (MoD), Dr. Sameer V Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defense Research and Development and Chairman, DRDO, and Lieutenant General Gael Diaz de Tuesta, National Armaments Director, DGA France, signed the agreement at DRDO Bhawan, New Delhi on November 20, 2025.

“This strategic partnership aims to leverage the combined expertise and resources of both the countries/entities to develop innovative solutions to future defense challenges,” the Defense Ministry said.

According to this new agreement, it creates a formal framework for joint research, training, testing, information exchange and specialized workshops to promote skills and expertise in defense research and development.

“It provides a formal framework for organizing joint research and training programmes, test activities, exchange of information, workshops, seminars, etc. to enhance skills and knowledge in Defense R&D,” the Defense Ministry said in its press note.

Under the agreement, transfer of equipment, know-how and technologies will be available to both the countries.

Key cooperation areas include aeronautical platforms, unmanned systems, advanced defense materials, cyber security, AI, space and navigation, propulsion, sensors, quantum technologies, underwater systems and other mutually beneficial domains.

“The key areas of cooperation outlined in this agreement include aeronautical platforms, unmanned vehicles, advanced materials for defense applications, cyber security, artificial intelligence, space, navigation, advanced propulsion, advanced sensors, quantum technologies, underwater technologies and other areas of mutual interest.”

Both sides expressed confidence that this cooperation will significantly contribute to national security and global defense technology progress.
