The already beleaguered Hardik Pandya could suffer a major setback if things don’t go well in the ongoing Indian Premier League (PL) 2024. While batsman Hardik is yet to fire, he has scored just 131 runs in 6 games. The average points scored this season is 26.20. Hardik was quite inconsistent with the ball and couldn’t even take responsibility. He has barely pitched in his past four games, and when he does, opposing team’s hitters tear him apart. Pandya has reportedly been included in India’s 2024 T20 World Cup squad, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee sending a clear message to Pandya.
According to a report in The Indian Express, India head coach Rahul Dravid, selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar and captain Rohit Sharma held a meeting at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai last week. During the meeting, the topic of Hardik’s selection was discussed, with the management claiming that he needs to play regularly to be selected.
Hardik has played at different stages this season but is yet to leave a positive mark. As a power bowler, he conceded 44 runs in 4 overs and in the middle overs, he conceded 62 runs in 6 overs. As a death bowler, he conceded 26 runs in just 1 over.
Among the contenders for a spot in Hardik’s team, Shivam Dube’s name tops the list. However, the selectors also reportedly have a problem with the Chennai Super Kings star as he has only played as an impact player for them. Dube is an all-rounder but CSK have not used his bowling this season.
The left-handed batsman has impressed many with his power-hitting this season, especially against spinners. If he does get selected for the T20 World Cup, he is likely to be used as a part-time bowler rather than as an all-rounder who can provide 4 overs to the team.
