Cases of children abandoning their parents and being cruel to them are not unheard of in our society. While such cases of the plight of senior citizens are often dismissed as a family matter, a man and his sister in Kerala may lose their jobs after leaving their elderly mother on her deathbed.

Police in Kerala’s Idukki district have registered a case against Mylakkal Saji (55) and his sister Siji (50) under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, over the death of their mother Annakutty Mathew. Who died during treatment. ,

Annakutty Mathew, 76, who lived alone in a rented house in Attapallaam Colony near Kumily in Idukki, was abandoned by his children.

His daughter, Siji, is a temporary employee of the Kumily Panchayat, while his son works as a collection agent for the Kumily Kerala Bank.

With the help of police, local people and ward members, Annakutty was admitted to Kottayam Medical College and Hospital, 112 km from his home, on Friday.

A sub-inspector called his son several times and asked him to take care of the elderly.

In response, Saji told them that he was busy and could not leave his house as he had to feed his dog.

Therefore, according to a statement by Idukki police chief Vishnu Pratip TK, a woman civilian police officer from Kumily police station was appointed as a visitor to the hospital.

Annakutty died at Kottayam Medical College on Saturday morning.

His last rites were performed the same day under the leadership of a Sub Inspector, where hundreds of people from the area, including Idukki District Collector Sheeba George and Sub-Collector Arun S Nair, paid homage to him.

Like others present in the crowd, Saji also paid his last respects to his mother. However, Siji did not even attend the funeral.

Police officials took the coffin to the graveyard of St. Thomas Ferona Church in Attappalam, while the District Collector and Sub-Collector remained present till the last rites were over.

After the final rights, a case was registered against the sibling under section 24 of the “Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. A report on the matter has been submitted to the District Collector, ” VA Nishadman, Deputy Superintendent of Police told News18.com.

According to the police, Section 24 of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 provides that whoever is responsible for the care or protection of a senior citizen shall be liable to completely abandon such senior citizen. If he leaves it at any place, he will be punished. Imprisonment for a term which may extend to three months or fine which may extend to five thousand rupees or both.

Panchayat officials said that the process of dismissing Siji from his post has been started. Kumily Kerala Bank, where Saji works, has also sought a report from the police. According to officials, on this basis he will be dismissed from the job.

According to sources, the son was against his mother because she did not share the money she earned after selling her land and he attended the funeral to sidestep a case.
