Guwahati:

More than 100 all-women polling stations will be set up in Guwahati Lok Sabha constituencies during the upcoming general elections, a senior official said on Sunday.

Guwahati Returning Officer Sumit Sartawan told a press conference that there are more female voters than male voters in the constituency and the number is likely to rise in the coming days.

The Guwahati constituency will go to polls in the third phase on May 7 with a total of 2,181 polling stations spread across Kamrup metropolitan area, Kamrup and Goalpara districts.

“Of these, we will have 102 all-women polling stations. All staff at these polling stations will be women. Besides, we will also set up 15 model polling stations in our constituencies,” Mr. Sathawan said.

He said the Guwahati Lok Sabha seat has 10 assembly constituencies, of which five are in Kamrup metropolitan area, three in Kamrup and two in Goalpara.

“We have 20,19,444 voters, including 9,93,268 men, 10,26,118 women and 58 third gender voters. These numbers are likely to go up after taking into account fresh voter applications,” he added.

Sartawan said that in addition to a considerable number of security personnel, about 9,000 civil servants will be involved in the voting activities.

“We will also have 25 flying squads, 15 static surveillance teams and 15 video surveillance teams to enforce the model code of conduct in letter and spirit,” Kamrup Municipal District Commissioner Mr. Sathawan said.
