Islamabad, Pakistan:
On Saturday, Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party announced it would form a government in the central region and in the provinces of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, giving the election commission until midnight to declare full results or else the results will be announced. Undeclared areas faced protests. Still waiting.
In a surprise move, independents backed by jailed former Prime Minister Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party won a majority of the 101 seats in the National Assembly in Thursday’s election.
Two days after the vote, the results are yet to be finalized and the country appears to be heading towards a hung parliament or a coalition government.
Addressing a press conference, PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan asked the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to declare complete results by midnight or face protests from his supporters in areas awaiting results, saying, ” PTI supporters will stage a peaceful protest outside the Returning Officer (RO) office. ”
He also accused the European Communist Party of failing to fulfill its constitutional role of publishing election results in a timely manner.
Gohar claimed that his party had won 170 seats, including those where PTI had been declared the winner, and that his party would form the government in the center as well as in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.
He also claimed that the PTI had certificates from polling stations, Form 45, showing that the candidates it supported had won, but the Returning Officer declared them unsuccessful.
Gohar appealed to the “institutions and judiciary” to accept the mandate of the people, who voted in favor of the PTI’s slogan “Slavery is unacceptable” and claimed that the mandate of the people should be accepted.
“The economy and the county cannot afford to have this authorization denied,” he said.
Gohar was handpicked as PTI chief after Imran Khan’s conviction. The soft-spoken barrister from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had struggled to run the party during the most difficult period when its founder was convicted and all frontline leaders left the party.
His leadership was also rejected by the European Communist Party in a case related to party polls and challenged by the party in the Supreme Court.
