'If there were EVMs...': Imran Khan faces Pakistan election fraud charges

Islamabad:

Jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that if there are electronic voting machines (EVMs) in elections, all rigging issues will be resolved within an hour, Dawn reported.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder made the remarks while talking to reporters at Adiala jail after hearing about the alleged involvement of his wife Bushra Bibi and aides in the Qadir Trust case.

“As per Imran Khan’s conversation with reporters, if electronic voting machines had been available today, the rigging issue would have been resolved within an hour,” PTI said in a post on the social media platform.

Pakistan’s Election Commission Imran Khan said some political parties and the “establishment” had “sabotaged plans to introduce electronic voting.”

Khan, speaking to reporters, sought “treason proceedings” against officials who allegedly stole the people’s mandate in the election.

Although he supported the demonstration outside the US offices of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), he distanced himself from the “anti-military” slogans raised by the protesters.

Imran Khan claimed that his party received over 30 million votes, while the remaining 17 parties combined received the same number of votes. The PTI raised irregularities in the polls with the International Monetary Fund and NGOs also pointed out flaws in the electoral process, he added.

The former prime minister said that first, PTI was deprived of its electoral symbol “bat” under a conspiracy and then the former ruling party was deprived of its share of reserved seats, adding that the theft of mandate was akin to treason, which attracted the public according to Dawn newspaper reported that Article 6 of the Constitution.

He said the Peshawar High Court order refusing to reserve seats for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf will be challenged in the Supreme Court, adding that the Election Commission of Pakistan cannot allot seats for the Tehreek-e-Insaf to other political parties.

The former prime minister also expressed fear that he might be convicted in the Qadir Trust case if the Islamabad High Court grants him bail in the Cryptocurrency and Toshakana cases.
Commenting on Pakistan’s economy, Imran Khan said the current government was unsustainable due to “economic fragility”.

He also dismissed criticism that PTI had brought the country to the brink of default. Khan said the PML-N was left with a $20 billion deficit in 2018 and had no choice but to seek help from the International Monetary Fund. Khan said the current government has no power to carry out structural reforms. He suggested that the government seek loans if it can repay its debt, Dawn newspaper reported.
Referring to party chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he said Gandapur should not take photos with the prime minister.
