“…I can’t do JEE”: Student commits suicide in Kota, Rajasthan; January 2

Another student who was preparing for the Joint Entrance Examination committed suicide in Kota, Rajasthan. This is the second suicide this month linked to increasing exam pressure among students.

The 18-year-old girl from Borkheda, Cota, was found hanging in her residence. new delhi tv the report said. Although her family acted quickly and rushed the girl to the hospital, doctors declared her dead.

Police have launched an investigation into the matter and the girl’s body has been sent for autopsy. Police also found a suicide note at the student’s residence.

“Mom and Dad, I couldn’t do JEE. So I committed suicide. I was a loser. My worst daughter. I’m sorry, Mom, Dad. This is my last choice,” the suicide note read.

Police said the deceased lived with her father, who worked in a bank, and was repeating Grade 12. Girls are under immense pressure due to highly competitive exams.

Even though she spent more than seven hours a day studying, she was still in a highly stressful situation.

A student who was preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in Kota committed suicide last week.

The student, aged 17 or 18, was found hanging in a hotel room in Kota. The boy was enrolled in a private NEET coaching centre.

However, no suicide note was found and a motive could not be determined.

The unfortunate incident took place at the Jawahar Nagar police station on the evening of January 23. The police rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call, notified the boy’s family and sent his body for autopsy.

Kota has the most cases of suicide due to tutoring students. The city still faces a shortage of clinical psychologists to deal with the mental health issues of some 250,000 students who prepare for various entrance exams far from home.

The psychological counseling center was set up at the New Medical College Hospital, Kota in September 2023 as per the budget announcement of the Rajasthan government, but there is no clinical psychologist.

NMCH has appointed only one clinical psychologist against the requirement of at least five and lacks adequate number of trained staff, PTI the report said.
