Trivandrum:

Anthy and seven of her family members were sleeping after attending Easter mass when a huge wave flooded her home in Pozijur near Powal, Thiruvananthapuram.

On Sunday, seawater entered the house and washed away everything they had prepared for the Easter feast and everything else in the house. They scrambled to try their best to rush out and save their lives.

Coastal communities in Thiruvananthapuram and many other coastal areas of Kerala were shaken by sudden rough seas on Sunday.

“It was like a tsunami. We did not receive any warning from the authorities and everything we owned was washed away by the sea water.” A tearful Ansi told PTI as the huge waves continued to engulf half of the area near her home. Damaged seawall.

More than 100 families in Pozjol had their houses damaged, some of them permanently losing their homes, and waves damaged fishermen’s boats and nets, causing huge losses.

Kulathoor Gram Panchayat said, “The huge waves continued to hit and submerged the entire area of Pozhiyoor and nearby areas for more than five hours. The situation is getting worse as the waves remained very strong and even climbed up the half-sea wall built at Pozhiyoor. “President Getha Suresh told PTI.

The coastal village of Pozjol looks like a cemetery, with cement bricks and the waste of damaged houses scattered around. On Sunday, the famous tourist attraction of Poval and nearby areas were completely submerged. Although the water has receded, huge waves are still crashing against the coast.

Coastal roads in the area were completely damaged. The fish landing area and Daxi Memorial Hall on the beach have been engulfed by sea water.

“No one has come to help us. It is election time and they will come to canvass votes. We have many things to ask them because we have been demanding a complete sea wall in this area.” A local fisherman was angry about the incident. The authorities said they were negligent.

“We have opened a camp at the government school and 24 families have been staying here since yesterday. But most of the affected people are not ready to come to the camp as they are not satisfied with the facilities provided here,” Geeta Suresh said.

She said there was only one government hospital in the area but the government had stopped providing inpatient facilities.

“There are many people who are bedridden and cannot enter the camp. If the hospital has inpatient facilities, then we can admit them there,” she added.

Rough seas and large waves are expected to continue until April 4.

According to INCOIS, the central government agency that issues weather warnings to the country’s fishermen, the phenomenon is caused by “high period swells”. But there is currently no scientific explanation to define this sudden phenomenon in a season when such rough seas are not a problem.
