Kolkata: Chairman of the Board of Administrators of Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC) Sujay Chakraborty has resigned from the post.

He told on Monday that he sent his resignation to state Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Firhad Hakim on Sunday.

Chakraborty has been serving as the Chairman of the Board of Administrators at HMC since August 18, 2021. He had earlier sent his resignation letter seeking relief from the post. However, his resignation was not accepted at that time. He sent his resignation letter again on Sunday and requested that it be accepted this time too.

However, the Trinamool Congress leader said that he had resigned from the post purely due to personal reasons. “No one wanted to remove me. This decision has been taken for personal reasons. If the party gives me any other responsibility, I will fulfill it,” he told a section of media persons.

Incidentally, Saikat Chaudhary, vice-chairman of the board of administrators in Howrah Municipal Corporation, had resigned a few days ago. There was speculation that he had taken this decision on the orders of the party.

According to Trinamool sources, a large section of the party was not happy with Chakraborty’s performance. The party believes that the anger of residents over municipal services in Howrah could affect the party’s prospects in the upcoming assembly elections. However, in this regard, Chakraborty said that the party has not given him any instructions to resign. However, it remains to be seen whether his resignation will be accepted this time or not.

The last elections in Howrah Municipal Corporation were held in 2013, and the municipal services were running without any elected councilor. After a long time, Chakraborty took charge as the Chairman of the Board of Administrators of Howrah Municipal Corporation in August 2021. This important city, across the Hooghly River and neighboring Kolkata, has since been running under an administrative board.

As a result of Chakraborty’s resignation announcement on Monday and the resignation of the vice-chairman a few days earlier, both the top positions on the Board of Administrators have become vacant.

It is noteworthy that the ‘Howrah Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill’ passed by the West Bengal Assembly in 2021 was stuck in the office of the Governor of West Bengal for a long time. This bill was recently signed by Governor CV Anand Bose. Therefore elections will be held soon.
