A senior official from Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi rebels said in an interview published on Monday that Italy would be targeted if it participated in attacks against Yemen.
Mohammed Ali Houthi, chairman of the Supreme Revolutionary Council of the Houthis, told La Repubblica that Italy must remain neutral in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and pressure Israel to stop its attacks on Gaza, adding that this was achieved The only way to peace is in the region.
Italy said on Friday it would send an admiral to command a European Union naval mission in the Red Sea it has joined to protect ships from attacks by Yemen’s Houthi militia.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the mission, which will be launched in mid-February, will be tasked with protecting commercial ships and intercepting attacks, but will not participate in strikes against the Houthis.
