Yverdon-les-Bains:
A hostage situation on a train in western Switzerland ended late Thursday when the suspect was shot dead in a police raid and the hostages were released safely, authorities said.
Vaud canton police spokesman Jean-Christophe Sauterel told a news conference that the hijackers were armed with axes and knives and spoke Farsi and English.
“At this stage of the investigation, the motives of the perpetrators are unknown,” he said.
He added that the hijackers had not been formally identified and investigations were ongoing.
The man was allegedly shot and killed by a police officer after he charged at him with an axe.
A total of 15 hostages were taken, including 14 passengers and conductors, and the entire process lasted nearly four hours, from around 6:35 pm to 10:30 pm (1735 to 2130 GMT).
The suspects forced the conductor of the train, which was parked near Yverdon, to join passengers, who reported the incident to police.
Negotiations with the suspects were conducted partly via WhatsApp and with the help of translators who spoke Farsi, Iran’s main language.
Authorities eventually decided to storm the train and moved to get the man away from the hostages, Sotterell said.
Hostage situations are rare in Switzerland, but they occasionally occur.
In January 2022, criminals took a couple and two employees of a company hostage and tried to enter a vault where precious metals were stored, but ultimately escaped without taking away the stolen goods.
In November 2021, the director of a watch company and his family were taken hostage in their home, with the attackers stealing the gold and flying to neighboring France.
